25 February 2022

The second in our series of seven short videos has been posted - A+W NZ 02: Garden and Water Pavilions.

Julie Stout is its first female recipient to be awarded the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Gold Medal . To celebrate Julie, and to acknowledge Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA in their selection, A+W NZ have created seven short videos to capture some of Julie’s infectious spirit, broad interests and influence, and serious commitment to architecture. The videos have been made to acknowledge the importance of Julie’s recognition and its effect on Aotearoa New Zealand’s architectural canon.

One video will be released each week, this week being the second installment in the series;

On Friday 14 January 2022, some members of A+W NZ visited Julie to talk with her about her experiences in architecture and life. In this second part of the series, Julie describes how the seeds for the Heke St House, Ponsonby, Auckland Tamaki Makaurau were already in place in her student work and her 1985 submission to the UNESCO House of the Future Competition. Through her experiences of travelling in sub-tropical and tropical climates with partner in life and architecture David Mitchell, Julie continued to interweave Water and Gardens into their architecture.
