He Wai: A Song - Part 1

NZIA Auckland Architecture Week - Saturday 26 September

Te Iringa Room, WG308, Sir Paul Reeves Building, AUT.

10am -12:00 noon - He Wai: A Song?

A+W•NZ aims to support the architectural community in all its diversity. In the spirit of manaakitanga (hospitality) this event combines the joy of singing waiata (songs) along with some understanding of tikanga (protocol) in relation to powhiri (welcoming). Bring the whole office for a cup of tea and some harmonies.

This was a gentle way to start a busy day, with two hours shared among approx 15 people led by Elisapeta Heta.

Elisapeta shared her knowledge and experience in Maoritanga by leading the (generally novice) group through their pepeha, the sequence of events in a powhiri, and where/why and how song is intertwined in the protocol.

The group marked out a 'typical' marae layout with their bodies, and completed the day with the learning of a waiata, led by the stunning and powerful voice of Elisapeta.

The group were able to practice the song learned throughout the day, as we are now able to accompany Elispeta as she leads the Waiata at the opening of all A+W•NZ events.

The entire event was recorded by sound maestro Dick Reade (Reade Audio Ltd). A+W•NZ contributed to the NZIA Venice Bienale 2016 exhibition Future Islands with a compilation of recordings from this event. You can access information on the NZIA publications here.

This event was PART 1 of many more He Wai: A Song? events - the next will be held in AAW 2016.
