A+W•NZ HAWKES BAY: SITE VISIT TO MARTIN HOUSE BY JOHN SCOTT

A new A+W NZ Group has been formed in the Hawkes Bay Region, and they have great things planned in their aim to foster a stronger architectural community.

Their first event is very soon: a visit to John Scott's Martin House next Sunday, 24 September, at 2 pm. John Scott's granddaughter, architect Hana Scott (SGA), will be on the site visit.

Martin House, designed by the late John Scott in 1970 and the 2017 NZIA Gisborne/Hawke’s Bay Enduring Architecture Award. This building has not just withstood the tests of time; it has become a valuable example of how connections can be made between people and place. The original client, acclaimed potter Bruce Martin, still lives there, which is evidence of the enduring nature of the home.

This building exemplifies a John Scott home. Architectural and construction skills are clearly visible throughout. The building is honest and functional, and the clients' loyalty to the commission is proof of a design that extends beyond the decades. A delightful and inspiring home with playful uses of volume, light and the relationship between shared and private space.

The clients' pottery building is set not far from the home, while more pared back in line with its function, has a similar charm and reflects a design period which not only inspired the building but the client’s ceramic designs.

A+W NZ Hawkes Bay invite you to a tour of this influential home to explore the design intricacies of the late John Scott building, and to meet local architects and designers. Drinks to follow at local winery.

A great turnout of approximately 25 turned out for this great opportunity to see the Martin House, some from as far afield as Wellington and Auckland who were visiting in the Napier area for the weekend. NZIA President Christina van Bohemen was one, and it is always good to have the support of the NZIA at our events - especially the regional ones!
