A+W•NZ INTERSTICES LUNCH 26 MAY 2017

Moira Gatens and Susan Ruddick will be in Auckland to give keynote lectures at this year’s Interstices symposium. This lunch will be a joint opportunity for women in architecture/planning and women in philosophy to meet these distinguished visitors in the relaxed environment of Ima Cuisine.

Professor Susan Ruddick (University of Toronto) is a distinguished urbanist, planner, and geographer. She trained pre-professionally in Architecture at the University of Waterloo, in Geography at McGill University, and received her PhD in Planning from the Graduate School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA, where she studied with Edward Soja. As a planner she has been active in the cooperative housing movement in Montreal, and the City of Los Angeles's Downtown Strategic Plan. Her academic research includes the evolution of service networks for homeless youth in Los Angeles, and more recently, the rethinking of the city as a biophilic site to better accommodate a thriving ecology and mitigate habitat loss for wildlife, with a focus on the Greater Toronto Area. She has published on race, class, and gender in public space.

Professor Moira Gatens (University of Sydney) is internationally renowned for her work in social and political philosophy, particularly in feminist philosophy and the study of Dutch philosopher Spinoza’s work. In 2012 she was appointed the Challis Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney. She has research interests in the following broad areas: social and political philosophy, feminist philosophy, early modern philosophy, and philosophy and literature. Her publications include Collective Imaginings: Spinoza, Past and Present (1999, with Genevieve Lloyd), Imaginary Bodies: Ethics, Power and Corporeality (1996) and Feminist Interpretations of Benedict Spinoza (2009, as editor).

Please note that Susan Ruddick will be delivering her keynote lecture on the same evening, Friday 26 May. Moira Gatens will be delivering her keynote lecture the following evening, Saturday 27 May.
