NZIA AAW 2015

A+W•NZ have participated in the NZIA Auckland Architecture Week since 2013, when it hosted the full week. In 2014, A+W•NZ held its first A+W•NZ Awards event, which will become a tri-annual award celebration. This year is no different, with A+W•NZ hosting a series of smaller events over a full day, Saturday 26 September.

We are very pleased to announce the line-up of what should be a full and fun day, and one which compliments the other NZIA events on that Saturday;

10am -12:00 noon - He Wai: A Song?

A+W•NZ aims to support the architectural community in all its diversity. In the spirit of manaakitanga (hospitality) this event combines the joy of singing waiata (songs) along with some understanding of tikanga (protocol) in relation to powhiri (welcoming). Bring the whole office for a cup of tea and some harmonies.

1:00 - 2:00pm - Book Launch: Architecture in an Expanded Field. Essays from the 2013 Symposium, edited by Lucy Treep and Sarah Treadwell.

Architecture in an Expanded Field is a collection of essays from a symposium held during Auckland Architecture Week 2013. The symposium examined the many extended fields of practice around the country and how the participation of women in these areas of architecture can have a productive and positive impact on the wider profession today. Each essay has the voice of its own author, and the collection ranges from practitioner to urban design, to heritage, to academic and to the arts. This publication is a limited edition and can be pre-purchased via Aalto Books – www.aaltobooks.co.nz. Copies will be available for sale at the launch. It is also available for pre-order via Aalto Books, at a 10% discount if purchased before Sat 26 Sept.

Currently female architects world-wide are under-represented on Wikipedia. As a popular and regular go-to resource for the general public, it stands to reason that including more women in Wikipedia will increase awareness of the expanding role they play in shaping our built environment. A+W•NZ aims to contribute to the global movement to 'write-in' women into Wikipedia by starting our own oral archive, and has started to conduct interviews with women of varying backgrounds, modes of practice and experiences who are currently working in the field of architecture. These interviews will be used to form the basis of future Wikipedia entries and are part of A+W•NZ wider intentions to research and document the pursuits of past and present females within the industry. So come along and be part of the wider discussion; share the stories of someone you have worked with or whose work you have admired. Take a seat, pull on some headphones and listen to some of today's most fascinating female practitioners talk about their architectural endeavours.

5:00 - 6:30pm - Date Night Ak•02

A+W•NZ invites all (yes, including men) to a night of conversation about architecture. This event offers the opportunity for those in the architecture profession, those who are soon to join, those who work in associated fields and those who may have suspended their professional lives for now, to get together for a night of mutual mentorship. Structured like a 'speed-dating' event, the evening will be an exciting and fast-paced mentoring session in the format of short and concise conversations - accompanied by delectable wine and nibbles.

Whether you are an 'up-and-coming', in suspension from the profession, or a well-established architect, your story can help others, and theirs can help you. Come along and share your experiences and aspirations.

Wellington Architecture Week

What a great turn out to the A+W•NZ Express Series yesterday (Tuesday 22 Sept) at the City Gallery in Wellington. Approx 90 people turned up to hear 6 rapid-fire presentations of current thesis projects of M/Arch(Prof) students.

The six women presented beautifully and had great reception from the audience.

Katherine Campbell-Hunt, Anneke Prins, Elyjana Roach, Maria Rodgers, Kristin Kilgour and Shannon Lenihan.

Feedback included the great initiative of bridging the public, academia and professional practice all in one room. The projects were diverse, creative and really well narrated.
