Claire Natusch

Situated on a dramatic promontory overlooking the Otamarakau Valley, this house bends with the contours of the land, framing the dramatic views in both directions. The occupants being farmers, live and work from home and wanted to separate the private/ domestic functions from the working side of the house. The 2 wings of the house are separated by a sheltered entry courtyard and an enclosed verandah – a light airy space with timber decking, where muddy boots & coats can be left behind. A thick western wall, with windows of various sizes puncturing it, give glimpses of the sun setting over the paddocks, while sheltering the northern deck from the prevailing winds.
