Beyond Brutal
An adaptive reuse proposal for a former Teachers' College in Karori, Wellington, based on the radical Barbican Centre in London.
Architecture is encouraged to play as accompanist to the melody of the existing architecture. Where new doesn’t necessarily have to overpower the old but learn from it and engage with it, not just at the superficial level of aesthetics but through the processes of its sensibilities. Architecture from our recent past cannot be left to a fate of
unconsidered demolition and premature obsolescence. They need architects to realize that architectural heritage cannot be
merely about the preservation of aesthetics but the legacy of the ethics, processes and sensibilities behind them.
