In 2013, four architectural graduates created their own project by working as a collaborative to build a small hut. All materials were donated or found and all labour generously given, meaning the 'Whare in the Bush' project changed the construction skills of the team developed and as it grew. This exhibition re-examines the ideas tied to New Zealand's DIY culture, our Nationalistic identity springing from the 'man alone' moniker, and the act of collaboration. The Whare in the Bush team are Raukura Turei, Ruby Watson, Rebecca Green and Elisapeta Heta, and they want to express their thanks to the very, very many friends and helpers who gave so generously of their knowledge and time.

A publication accompanies the exhibition, designed by Amy Yalland at Index and published by St Pauls St Publishing. You can purchase a copy directly from St Paul's St Gallery, Index, or email us directly. UBS, Unity Books and Time Out also stock it.

The publication has just been named a finalist in the 2015 Best Awards.

Several articles have been written about this project, including this one titled The Story of The Whare in the Bush, by Elisapeta Heta, in The Vernacularist: The Environmental Issue, published by The Depot Art Gallery, 2014.

The opening night featured a performance interactive with the work, by Atamira dancers Bianca Hyslop and Jack Gray, seen in the image below.
