Gold! Julie Stout Gold Medal Winner 2021
16 Feb 2022We are celebrating!
On Wednesday 16 February 2022, Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects announced Julie Stout as the 2021 Gold Medal winner.
The Gold Medal is the highest individual honour an architect can achieve in New Zealand, and Julie is its first female recipient. A+W NZ are celebrating the historical significance of this award – and offering our huge congratulations to Julie, whose full and broad body of work is so deserving of this high honour.
To celebrate Julie, and to acknowledge Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA in their selection, A+W NZ have created seven short videos to capture some of Julie’s infectious spirit, broad interests and influence, and serious commitment to architecture. The videos have been made to acknowledge the importance of Julie’s recognition and its effect on Aotearoa New Zealand’s architectural canon.
We acknowledge Te Kāhui Whaihanga NZIA in their excellent selection for the 2021 Gold Medal, and especially for opening doors to women in the future.
thank you for looking.
(And dare we say it – it’s about time!)
A+W NZ are also very proud of the effect that the A+W NZ Dulux Award programme has had on the visibility of women in architecture.
The awards were designed with specific targets for each of the three awards (link article), and the A+W NZ Chrystall Excellence Award (link) showcases the many women who have led ‘expanded and full careers in architecture over several decades. A major focus of this career award is recognition of excellence in a body of work, leadership, and contribution to the community through mentorship.’
Julie Stout was also the first recipient of the A+W NZ Chrystall Excellence Award, again leading the way and a mentor for so many. The breadth of her career includes the establishment of award-winning practice Mitchell Stout Dodd Architects with partner in life and architecture, David Mitchell (Gold Medal 2005), her deep involvement in the protection of the urban form of Tamaki Makaurau, especially through her role leading Urban Auckland, and inspiring the next generation of architects as a Professional Teaching Fellow at the University of Auckland.
The future is bright for women working in architecture.
Thank you, Julie, for leading the way.
